What do we do?

The Martlets is a charity that supports adults, including their families, living in Brighton and Hove and the surrounding areas who need supportive care and may also be approaching the end of their lives. We may be involved from the time an illness is diagnosed up to the time a person dies. We are proud of the high quality clinical care we provide. As well as meeting medical needs we also work to meet the emotional, spiritual, social, and practical needs of patients and their families and carers. We can offer this in our 18-bed ward, in our day services, and in patients’ homes. We also offer counselling and support for patients and families through the illness and afterwards.

Anyone who works for us could, no matter what job they do, come into contact with people with incurable or life-limiting illnesses or with someone who has lost a relative or friend. We rely on all our staff to help us ensure that patients and their families are treated with dignity and respect in all that we do.

We excel at providing high quality care, we expect commitment to this from all our clinical and other staff, and support them in this aim with development and study opportunities. Our success in providing high quality care is exemplified in what patients and family say - one example below:

"My daughter was admitted from the hospital to the hospice to manage pain, she was there for 2 weeks and sadly passed away at Martlets who treated her with great care and compassion and most of all respect. They were also wonderful to me and the rest of the family. My heartfelt thanks goes out to them all"
